Uma

Gen 6 - 1927-2007 (80 years)

Uma was the second daughter of Gaganvihari and Saudamini.

  • BA in Philosophy from Lady Brabourne College, Kolkata

  • Studied sociology at Cornell University, USA

  • Was on the team of translators of Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi (99 volumes in all) under the leadership of Prof. CN Patel

  • Learnt Russian language at the age of 47, and was awarded a scholarship by the Soviet Government to study Russian in Moscow

  • Later, translated fiction including Tolstoy’s children’s books and short stories from Russian to Gujarati

  • Won the Sahitya Akademy award for her translation of Sunil Gangopadhayay’s novel Sei Samoy (Vol. 1) into Gujarati as "Nava Yugnu Parodh" in 2002

  • Translated from Gujarati into English “Torn from the Roots” - the biographical account of the post-Partition years on the lives of women “Mool Sotan Ukhdelan” by Kamla Patel
